And a little squirrel shall lead them

Our planet was not quite poised for World War II at the time Hollywood sent these squirrels out onto the nation's movie screens to carry the message of peace. The apocalyptic vision they share in this video is no less potent because of its animated format.

And forgive the twist on a biblical reference I have given the title of this post: The concept of peace on earth makes as much sense in the secular realm as the spiritual.

Please devote 8 minutes to watching this video. Yes, it's a cartoon and yes, the main characters are squirrels, but this vintage MGM video is so much more.

Even now, so many decades later, animals - real and animated - still have much to teach us.

Enlightened sensibility - and being delivered via squirrels is especially impressive.

It's difficult to imagine such a "cartoon" being made in the present day.

I was enjoying the film, Squirrelmama, but it cut out on me and I couldn't get it started again. I'll try later.

This is one dark cartoon. I could not even comment after I watched it. Although certain aspects of animation could be darker then (remember when Bambi's mother got shot?), this is considerably ahead of its time. Nice to know the squirrels created something good out of man's destruction. Dallas

Yes, Dallas, sadly it is a dark cartoon, probably subtitled, "The Apocalypse According to Grandpa Squirrel." It was masterful for its time and holds up, even now.....Just wish the politics of the day could have changed between the 30s and now....

Very moving.

And considering what happened in the years after it was made, very enlightening.
