Momma squirrels often have more than one nest at a time. The reason for this is simple: the first nest may become no longer suitable or habitable for reasons of fleas infesting the nest, or a predator finding the nest and making it no longer safe. The momma always has a backup (smart girl, no?) and it is possible that this is what you are seeing. Your nest on the ledge is either the backup or the primary nest. Or perhaps she built it and had second thoughts.
